We are happy to showcase our featured member for this month, Anabelle Harari! Anabelle recently graduated from Tufts University with her Masters degree in Nutrition Science and DPD from Simmons College. When she is not practicing yoga or cooking up a storm in her tiny Boston kitchen, you can find her taking photos for her blog and Instagram account @localbelle. Anabelle will start her dietetic internship in the fall at Massachusetts General Hospital, and plans to have a nutrition practice focused on mindful and intuitive eating.

Who or what inspired you to become interested in integrative and functional nutrition?

I have been interested in a holistic approach to nutrition and health in a formal capacity since starting my degree in Nutrition Communications at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. The questions at the core of integrative and functional nutrition have always fascinated me. What we eat matters just as much as who we eat with or where we eat. In the past few years I’ve become very interested in mindfulness, and I am excited to combine these two passions with increased participation in the study and practice of mindful nutrition.

What area of practice do you plan to go into and how do you plan to secure a job that utilizes integrative and functional nutrition?

I am interested in working with women dealing with hormonal issues. Endocrinology and environmental factors impact our health in vastly underreported and underappreciated ways. I am excited to be an entrepreneur in this burgeoning field. I am currently developing a business plan to start a private practice focused on mindful nutrition and intuitive eating.

What education or training in integrative and functional nutrition have you completed or what education or training in integrative and functional nutrition do you plan to complete in the future?

I plan on becoming certified in mindful and intuitive eating this summer. I recently completed my yoga teacher certification. I will be starting my dietetic internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the fall and plan to get involved with their Benson-Henry Mind-Body Institute.

What advice would you give other students interested in learning more about integrative and functional nutrition?

Definitely check out the DIFM website. It is a fantastic resource. Additionally, their Facebook group is also very active and I find that the community is very responsive to questions. Lastly, stay updated on the latest research, trust your gut, and follow your curiosities.

Thank you for sharing from the student's perspective, Anabelle!
